A number of the first houses to be erected in St. Andrews were simple Cape Cod dwellings, a rectangle with central chimney and very little by way of trimming. Because New Brunswick was still being carved out of the wilderness, there were few mills and finished lumber was at a premium. Some found it cheaper to dismantle their dwellings back in Castine and reassemble them here. The Coffee House, located at the corner of Water and William Streets, was one such. There are several still left in the town. Unfortunately, a large fire in 1930 destroyed the Coffee House and another landmark called Happy Corner.
